Atolan은 대만 동부 해안에 거주하는 토착민의 고유 언어로 ‘돌이 많은 지역’이라는 뜻을 가진 단어이며
‘바위더미’, ‘바위로 쌓은 담’, 또는 ‘바위로 지은 집’으로 해석되기도 한다.
A’tolan House의 부지는 태평양에 인접한 대만의 동부 해안가에 위치하고, 남북 축으로 놓인 길이 약 90m, 너비 30m의 좁고 긴 직사각 형태로 토대가 세워졌다.
해안선을 따라 북쪽으로부터의 축이 약 60m 내려간 구조는 동쪽으로 130도 구부러져 있고
서쪽으로부터 동쪽으로 이어지는 하향 경사로는 변형되어 이 주택의 3개 층 중 맨 아래층을 이룬다.
이 프로젝트의 본질은 A’tolan 전통적인 고유의 건축기술을 이용하는 것이다.
이 부지에서 파낸 바위들이 계단식 논 같이 구성된 3개 층에 걸쳐 동서로 이어진 담을 쌓는 데 사용되었다.
맨 위층에는 앞마당과 차를 타고 들어가는 진입로가 있고, Atolan 중간층에는 주요 구조물이 자리하고, 맨 아래층에는 트리하우스와 잔디밭이 있다.
웅장한 바다를 마주하고 겸손한 자세로 서 있는 이 구조물은 130도의 각도로 바다를 향해 두 팔을 벌린 듯 휘어져서 해안선의 형세를 따라 비교적 낮은 측면으로 확장된다.
철재 프레임은 이 지역 고유의 바위들로 마감되었고, 다양한 허브가 심긴 살아있는 지붕은 고원의 산책로가 되어 준다.
사람의 손으로 만든 요소들을 감추기 위해 자연을 배경으로 활용한 넓은 돌계단은 고원에서부터 건물의 야외로비까지 이어진다.
건축가는 대자연의 고요한 아름다움으로 둘러싸인 이 구조물에 기본적인 숙소와 취사의 요구를 만족시킬 수 있는 가장 덜 공격적인 디자인을 선택하였다.
따라서 실내공간은 요리영역과 수면영역만으로 구성되고, 공간들은 빛과 공기가 어디든 자유롭게 유입될 수 있도록 아코디언 형태의 유리문으로 경계가 지어졌다.
이곳에서 사람들은 광대한 바다나 금욕적인 바위담에 위압될 수 있다.
천창으로 덮인 샤워실, 취침영역 바로 바깥의 야외 욕조, 로비 한쪽에 긴 테이블이 놓인 야외 식사영역, 요가를 하거나
별을 볼 수 있는 구조물 앞에 자리한 다용도 영역 등 몇몇 영역은 실내공간의 평등한 기능을 공생적으로 향상시킨다.
주변의 자연과 조심스럽게 맺은 공생관계를 통해서 영향을 최소화한 이 구조물은, 트리하우스, 잔디밭, 대만의 상징 흑곰
바다를 끌어안기 위해 130도 각도로 열린 풀 등 그 안에 무한한 가능성을 가지고 있다.
A’tolan is a word meaning, ‘place with many rocks’, from the indigenous language of the natives on the east coast of Taiwan.
It may also be interpreted as ‘piling of rocks’, ‘building wall with rocks’, or ‘a house made out of rocks’.
The site of A’tolan House is located on the eastern seaboard of Taiwan, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean.
The foundation has narrow rectangular shape of approximately 90 meters in length and 30 meters in width
sitting on the north-south axis. Following the coastline, at approximately 60 meters down the axis from the north
the structure turns 130 degrees east. The downward slope from west to east is transformed and represented in three levels.
The essence of this project is the use of traditional native architectural technique of A’tolan.
The rocks excavated from the site are used to build the east-west walls spanning over three levels like rice paddy terraces.
Top level: driveway entrance/front yard, Middle level: main structure, Bottom level: tree house/lawn
With a humble posture in front of the majestic sea, the structure extends with relative low profile along the contour of the coastline
following its bend as if opening itself to the sea at an angle of 130. The steel frame is clad with the native rocks and the living
roof with various herbs serves as walkway on a plateau. Utilizing the natural background to hide the handmade
elements, the wide stone stairway descends from the plateau to the open-air foyer of the building.
