표정이 많은 집 House of Many Faces
집이라는 단어는 사전적으로 ‘사람이나 동물이 살 수 있게 지은 건물’을 뜻한다.
이처럼 기준 자체는 꽤 포괄적이지만, 사람들은 ‘집’을 생각할 때 무의식적으로 특정한 이미지를 떠올리기 마련이다.
그렇다면 지나치게 넓은 이 공간을 과연 집이라고 부를 수 있을까?
이 장소는 원래 길고 좁은 부지에 낡은 사무실과 넉넉한 크기의 창고가 자리했던 곳이다.
그런데 한 대담한 클라이언트가 이 어수선한 공간을 집으로 탈바꿈시키는 도전을 감행했다. 거실이 될 공간만 해도 십여 대의 자동차를 주차할 수 있을 정도로 광활하다.
기존의 건물 구조는 두 개의 주요 부분으로 나뉘어 있었다.
거리 쪽을 바라보는 전통적인 앞부분은 2층 높이의 묵직한 파사드와 그 내부에 혼란스러운 방들의 배열을 가지고 있었고, 후면부에는 튼튼한 목재 들보로 지지되는 박공지붕 아래에 넓디넓은 공간이 펼쳐져 있었다.
이 프로젝트는 이런 긴 부지의 구조를 활용하여 일련의 횡단면으로 설계되었다.
넓은 공간 속 질서를 잡기 위해 다섯 개의 단면을 새롭게 정의하고 도입했다.
두 주요 부분은 이제 내부의 마당으로 분리되었으며, 앞쪽 건물은 작은 아파트 단위로 나뉘어 가벼운 장치들을 통해 공간을 분할했다.
반면, 창고는 거대한 거실로 변모했고, 여기에 하나의 곡선형 벽이 자리 잡았다.
새롭게 바뀐 이곳은 언뜻 보기에는 집이라고 느껴지지 않을 만큼 독특한 분위기를 풍긴다.
그러나 적당히 실용적인 주방과 커다란 벽난로가 이곳이 가정임을 암시한다.
다섯 개의 단면은 입면 디자인으로 표현되었다. 각각의 입면은 고유의 개성을 지니면서도 공통적인 특징을 함께 공유한다.
격자 형태로 배열된 검은 점들은 콘크리트 구조를 해석하고 파사드의 형태를 정의하는 데 사용되었다.
또, 산발적으로 배치된 창문들, 눈에 띄는 노란 문과 녹색 셔터, 유리 블록의 표면 등은 내부 복잡한 방들의 구성과 조화를 이루며 긴장감 있는 구도와 강렬한 인상을 만들어낸다.
과거 단순한 창고였던 이 공간은 이제 다채롭고 독창적인 개성을 가진 집으로 새롭게 태어났다.
The dictionary definition of a house is ‘a building in which people or animals can live’.
Compared to the standard of the quite generous word itself, a house has a typicality which generally reminds people of it.
Can this oversized house be a house? The very long narrow plot was used to accommodate shabby offices and a
spacious warehouse. A fearless client aimed at transforming this clutter into a home.
A space soon to be living room was large enough to park a dozen of cars.
The structure of the existing building is divided into two parts. A conventional front facing the street has a two-story
high dull facade and a disarray of rooms, while the back part has vast space under a gable roof supported by heavy wooden beams.
The project is conceived as a series of cuts across the lengthy perimeter.
Five facets are reassessed and introduced to orderly arrange the extensive space. The two parts are now separated by an inner courtyard.
The building in front takes in a series of small apartments, dividing the space with a number of slight gestures.
The warehouse simply turns into a massive living room that is then interrupted by one curved wall.
A proper kitchen and a monumental fireplace are the only hints of uncertain domesticity.
