셔크셔크 는 밴쿠버 이스트펜더가(街)에 있는 차이나타운의 새로운 음식 콘셉트에 맞춰 조성된 레스토랑이다.
굴 껍데기를 그릇으로 사용하는 독특한 콘셉트를 통해 진기한 식자재와 지속가능성에 대한 철학을 굴에 결합시켰다.
또한, 이 레스토랑은 입석 전용으로, 다양한 방식으로 사람들이 서로 연결되도록 함으로써 매우 사회적이면서도 친밀한 환경을 조성하고자 했다.
그러면서도 개인이 어떠한 불편함 없이 캐주얼하게 다녀갈 수 있는 공간으로 꾸몄다.
테이블 어느 곳에 서 있느냐에 따라, 개인이 느끼는 공간감과 다른 사람들과의 상호작용 정도가 달라진다.
가볍고 편한 식사를 위해 부담 없이 들를 수 있는 이곳은 퇴근 후나 저녁 식사 전후 시간에 조개류를 제공하는 장소로 사람들에게 각인되고 있다.
굴을 좋아하는 마니아층에게 인기를 끌면서도 굴을 싫어하는 사람들에게는 인식을 변화시키는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다.
실내공간은 뜯어낸 콘크리트 바닥, 노출콘크리트 기둥, 콘크리트 천장, 기계 배관과 도관으로 구성된다.
언뜻 단순해 보이면서도 공간 이곳저곳을 떠다니는 길이 142㎝의 길고 구불구불한 테이블이 눈길을 끈다.
이 테이블은 하나의 건축적 개입으로 공간에서 식사의 몰입감을 높이며 사용자에게 편안함을 안겨준다.
섬유강화콘크리트로 성형한 테이블은 사람들과 잔잔하게 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 여유롭고 캐주얼한 ‘바’와 손님을 에워싸는 친근한 ‘부스’ 중간에 자리한다.
주로 거칠고 단조롭고 회색을 띠는 굴 껍데기는 안에 있는 섬세한 진주를 보호한다. 테이블의 질감과 마감 역시 굴과 유사하게 디자인되었다.
콘크리트 테이블 밑면은 굴 껍데기처럼 거칠고 감싸듯이 마감되었다.
겉면은 부드럽고 매끄럽고 윤이 나는 특성을 보이며, 색상의 불완전성은 소재의 수제 공정을 의도적으로 보여준다.
이런 거칠고 투박한 미감은 가공하거나 다듬지 않은 팔레트로 유난히 따뜻하게 감싸는 분위기를 연출하며,
전구를 노출한 채 테이블 위에서 불규칙한 패턴으로 우아하게 떠 있는 가느다란 조명들과 더욱 대조를 이룬다.
한편, 채색된 음향 벽 패널은 거친 질감의 외관에 뛰어난 내구성과 음향 성능을 결합해 만들었다.
Shuck Shuck is a restaurant for a new food concept in Vancouver’s Chinatown, on East Pender Street. This new concept using oysters as vessels,
combined them with the philosophy about novel ingredients and sustainable practices. As a standing-only restaurant,
it tried to create highly social yet intimate environment by allowing customers to connect in various ways.
Depending on where they stand at the table, their personal sense of space and level of interaction with others vary.
Shuck Shuck, the urban grazing stop, is recognized as a place to serve shellfish after work, before and after dinner,
and focuses on being a draw for the oyster-lovers and on converting the perception of oyster-adverse people.
The interior space consists of stripped concrete floors, exposed concrete columns,
concrete ceiling, mechanical ducts and conduits. A 142㎝ long serpentine table floating its way through the space attracts the attention.
As a single architectural intervention, it makes customers immerse themselves in a meal and feel comfortable.
The fiber-reinforced precast concrete table mediates between a loose and casual “bar”
where customers can have a calm conversation and the intimate “booth” that wraps around them.
