교토 완드 카페 / Kyoto Wand Café

교토는 사찰, 사당, 문화 시설이 세계적으로 유명한 관광 명소로, 관광객들에게 인기 있는 여행지이다.

특히 길이 80㎞가 넘는 산책로인 ‘교토 라운드 트레일’을 비롯한 많은 산책로가 있어 스포츠 활동에 이상적인 환경이다.

일본 전통 타운하우스 마치야(町屋)를 개조한 이 프로젝트는 낮 관광객이 머물 수 있는 거점을 제공하고자 한다.

설계팀은 지역에 대한 인지도를 높이기 위해,

독창적이고 우아한 교토 마치야 마을 풍경의 일부로서 커뮤니티의 사랑을 받을 수 있도록 건물을 보수, 보강, 개조했다.

부지는 북쪽이 비교적 넓은 도로에 면하고 동쪽에 막다른 사유(私有) 골목길이 있는 모퉁이 땅이다.

1층은 대형 유리창과 유리 미닫이문을 통해 외부와 바로 연결된다.

특정 계절에는 도로를 향해 미닫이문을 열어 두어, 이곳이 만 지역처럼 도시의 흐름을 흡수하는 모임 장소가 되도록 구상했다.

1층에는 리셉션, 주방, 픽업/리턴 카운터, 다과, 사이드 테이블과 의자가 딸린 벤치,

안마당을 향한 4인용 테이블 등이 있고, 화장실, 사물함, 샤워실은 건물 뒤쪽에 있다.

기존의 보, 기둥, 흙벽에서 오래된 표현을 끌어내어 건물의 설계 구성과 물성으로 활용했고, 새로운 특징들은 위층의 기존 구조에 신중하게 포함되었다.

1층 뒤쪽 평지붕 부분의 샤워실에 설치된 개인 샤워부스 2개와 2인용 샤워부스 1개, 짐을 보관하는 사물함 말고도,

2층은 기존 보와 다락방 사이의 공간에 하얀 벽면이 설치되었고, 보통 좌석 영역으로 이용된다.

이곳은 샤워실 등이 이용 시간제 요금체계로 운영된다는 점에서 일반 카페와 다르다.

주문에는 아이폰 같은 전자기기를 활용한다.

커피 원두는 두 명의 유명 로스터가 각각 진하게 연하게 볶아서 제공하고, 일본 홍차 역시 전문가가 엄선해서 제공하고 있다.

본류에서 분리된 강둑에 형성된 만(灣) 모양의 땅을 완드(wand, 灣處)라 한다.

교토 완드(Kyoto Wand, 京都灣處)는 이곳에 모이는 모든 사람에게 완드처럼 온화하고 자유로운 장소가 되길 바란다.

Kyoto City with many temples, shrines, and cultural facilities is world-famous tourist attraction and popular

destination for tourists. In particular, it is ideal environment for sports activities

with many trails including “Around Kyoto Trail” which is over 80 kilometers long.

This project is a renovation of a Japanese traditional townhouse Machiya, and aims to provide a

base for day tourists to stay. The design team worked on repairing, reinforcing, and updating

the building so as to be loved by the local community as part of the original elegant

The site is a corner lot with the north side facing a relatively wide road, while a private cul-de-sac

road runs through it on the east side. The first floor is directly connected to the exterior through

large glass windows and glass sliding doors. In certain seasons, the sliding doors can be opened to

face the driveway, in order that this can be a gathering place taking in the flow of the city like a bay area.

On the first floor, there are a reception area, a kitchen, a pickup/return counter, refreshments,

a bench with side tables and chairs for seating, and a table for four in front of a small garden.

A restroom, lockers, and shower room are located at the back of the building.

The design composition and materiality of the building are elicited from the age-old expressions

of the existing beams, pillars, and earthen walls. The new features are thoughtfully embedded in the above existing structure.
