영국의 디자인듀오 차일드 스튜디오(Child Studio)가 런던의 한 우체국을 일식레스토랑으로 탈바꿈시켰다.

유명한 애비로드 건널목 근처의 세인트존스우드 지역에 위치한 후기모더니스트 건물은 디자이너들에게 풍부한 영감의 원천을 제공하였다.

설립자인 알렉시 코스(Alexy Kos)와 체 황(Che Huang)은 “우리 목표는 이 건물과 지역의 독특한 역사를 재발견하여 기리는 것이었다.

우체국은 1960년대에 지어진 건물이었다. 우리의 디자인은 우체국이 건설된 당시 런던의 모더니스트 유산에 경의를 표한다.

일본의 표현은 섬세하며, 재료의 선택, 기하학적 패턴의 유희, 수공 목세공품의 디테일을 통해 나타난다”고 말했다.

이 말을 방증하듯, 설계팀은 1958년 노먼 체르너(Norman Cherner)가 디자인한 상징적인 주형 합판 안락의자를

일본 디자이너 후카사와 나오토(Nauto Fukasawa)의 주조 알루미늄 스툴과 배치, 동서양의 조화를 추구했다.

공간 전체를 가로지르는 벽들은 이탈리아 합리주의디자인의 선구자인 Stilnovo의 고풍스러운 놋쇠 촛대들과

함께 짙은 체리목 패널로 마감되었고, 얕은 벽감들은 대형 추상화 작품들로 장식되었다.

실내공간에는 유럽과 일본 디자인의 영향이 미묘하게 혼재되어 있다.

설계팀은 부드러운 파란색조의 격자천장을 고안, 세련된 기하학적 패턴을 공간 전체에 흩뿌렸다.

중심점은 중앙의 아일랜드 카운터로, 스시 장인이 정통 일식요리를 준비하여 제공하는 곳이다.

바 하단의 반사성이 있는 곡면 강철 패널은 1965년 가에 아울렌티(Gae Aulenti)가 디자인한 조각적인 테이블램프 ‘Pipistrello’로 보완했다.

대형 반원형 유리블록 파티션은 공간을 둘로 나누어, 레스토랑 뒤편에 조용한 라운지를 형성한다.

햇빛은 질감이 있는 유리를 통해 걸러져서 고요하고 차분한 분위기를 연출한다.

“이런 특징은 동시대의 바로 옆 건물인 세인트존스우드도서관의 파사드에서 영감을 얻었다.

매장 전면은 작고 겸손한 반면, 도서관 입구는 네모난 유리블록과 짙은 목재 프레임이 아름답게 결합되었다”고 두 디자이너는 덧붙였다.

지역 역사와 관계를 맺고 지역 구조에 결합된 이 식당은, 세심하게 연구된 사려 있는 디자인이

향수의 정취와 현대적 감성을 어떻게 균형 잡을 수 있는지를 보여준다.

British design duo Child Studio has transformed a post office in London into a Japanese restaurant.

Located in Saint John’s Wood district near the famed Abbey Road crossing, the late modernist building provided a rich source of inspiration for the designers.

“Our aim was to rediscover and celebrate the unique history of this building and the neighbourhood.

The post office was built in the 1960s and our design pays tribute to London’s modernist heritage of that era.

The Japanese expressions are subtle, and reveal through the choice of materials, the play of geometric patterns and the hand-crafted woodwork details.

” commented Alexy Kos and Che Huang, the founders of Child Studio.

As evidenced by these words, the design team sought the harmony between the East and West by placing the

iconic moulded plywood armchairs designed by Norman Cherner in 1958 with the cast aluminium stools by the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa.

The walls across the entire space are clad in dark cherry wood panelling with antique brass sconces by Stilnovo,

the Italian pioneers of rationalist design. The shallow alcoves are decorated with large abstract paintings.
