베니스 로프트 Venice Loft

Venice Loft는 4개 층과 옥상 정원으로 구성되었고, 사무공간은 3개 층에, 갤러리 공간은 그 아래, 생활공간은 펜트하우스에 위치한다.

각 층의 면적은 약 418㎡이다.

Alexander Design은 아래층들을 갤러리와 사무공간으로 사용되는, 베니스에 있는 역사적인 4층짜리 로프트의 주거공간인 펜트하우스를 개조, 설계하였다.

맨 위층과 옥상은 클라이언트의 사적인 생활영역이다. 이 건물은 현재 LA 시내로 이사한 아트컬렉션협회가 사용했었는데

디자인팀이 이 건물을 얻었을 때는 대부분 건식벽체로 마감된 창문이 나 있는 갤러리로 꾸며졌으며 건물 고유의 역사적이고 산업적인 특성이 뒤덮고 있었다.

디자인팀은 이 건물의 이야기와 정신을 드러낼 뿐 아니라 클라이언트가 시내에 있을 때 사용할 수 있도록 호화스러운 생활과 작업 공간을 조성하고자 했다.

컬러 팔레트와 주 자재

건물의 울퉁불퉁한 산업적 요소들은 물론 콘크리트 바닥과 아연 창문으로부터 자연적인 그레이를 참고하여

전체적인 컬러 팔레트는 남성적이다.

유기적 질감을 내는 리넨뿐 아니라 따뜻하게 바랜 안장과 꼬냑 컬러의 가죽과 섞인 블랙과 그레이를 사용하여 팔레트의 어두운 분위기를 유지하였다.

공간에는 어마어마한 양의 빛이 유입되고, 로프트 고유의 개방성은 햇빛이 잘 드는 열린 특성을 해치지 않고도 이 어두운 팔레트와 잘 어울렸다.

주방의 콘셉트는 미묘한 산업적 분위기를 계속 이어가되 디자인에 있어서는 현대적으로 세련되고 멋스럽게 만드는 것이었다.

이런 도전은 극도로 높은 천장고에서 드러났으며, 디자인팀은 그 높이를 강조하여 창문과의 관계를 강조하기 위해서 천장으로부터 벽 선반을 매달기로 결정했다.

옥상에서는 도시 전경은 물론 해변, 산타모니카 부두, 베니스 로프트 양 방향의 해안선 전경을 360도로 볼 수 있다.

전경은 놀랍고 대단한 장관을 이루고 있지만, 공동의 기회를 만들고 활성화시키는 방법을 만들어내는 것은 도전이었다.

나무를 심기 위한 흙, 바닥에 깔 자갈, 보치게임장을 위해 화강암처럼 만든 바닥까지도 크레인으로 올려야 했다.

나무들은 빛을 거르는 것은 물론 공간을 따뜻하게 하고 경계를 정하는 수단 외에도 확실히 놀랄 만한 아름다움을 선사한다.

디자인팀은 갈대와 금속으로 만든 퍼걸러 구조 아래의 야외주방 겸 식사공간, 편안하고 깊숙한 침대 겸용 소파가 놓인 생활공간

햇빛을 받으며 누워서 전경을 바라볼 수 있는 높은 플랫폼, 공기가 청정한 시기를 위한 요가 플랫폼도 만들었다.

Venice Loft has 4 floors and a roof garden, and the living space is on the penthouse level with 3

floors of office and gallery space below. Each floor has approximately 4500 square feet.

Alexander Design restored and designed a residential top floor/penthouse level of this 4-storied historical loft space in Venice

while the bottom floors are being used as gallery and office space. The top floor and roof top are private living quarters for our client.

The building had previously housed the broad foundations art collection before they moved to downtown Los Angeles, and when

design team got the building it had been set up as a gallery with most windows covered by drywall and the inherent history and

industrial nature of the building covered up. Design Team sought to not only reveal the story and soul of the building

but also create a luxurious live/work space for our client to use when he is in town.

Color palate and main materials

The overall color palette is masculine, both referencing the natural grays from the concrete floors and zinc windows as

well as the ruggedness of the industrial elements inherent to the building. Design Team kept the palette fairly dark with many

blacks and grays mixed with warm weathered leathers in saddle and cognac, as well as organic textural linens.

The space has a tremendous amount of light, and since it is a loft space, the inherent

openness is combined well with this dark palette without compromising its sunny open nature.
