1957년, 최초의 인공위성 스푸트니크가 하늘 위로 솟구쳤다.
네 개의 다리가 달린 얌전한 구체(球體)는 대략 3개월 정도 지구 행성 둘레를 돌다가 분해됐다.
스푸트니크가 사라진 후, 소련과 미국은 우주 비행 기술력의 우위를 점유하기 위해 경쟁했다.
기체는 소멸됐지만, 우주 개발 경쟁 시대의 발화점이 됐다.
오스트리아 비엔나의 제1 자치구에 있는 스푸트니크 바(Sputnik Bar)는 바로 그 파장의 주인공 스푸트니크를 공간으로 복각한 작업물이다.
강화된 곡면 가죽 좌석, 대형 볼트로 고정된 스테인리스스틸 바, 가죽으로 표면을 덮은 스테인리스스틸 스툴,
빛을 발하는 테이블, 밝은 노란색 화장실, 회전하는 사이렌처럼 생긴 벽 조명, 창틀에 가려져 불투명
유리를 빛나게 하는 LED 조명 등 과거 우주선의 요소들이 공간에 즐비해있다.
그렇다고 해서 과거 소련이 만든 기체를 공간에 복각한 것만은 아니다.
설계팀은 우주선의 요소에 소련이 아닌 미국식 간이식당의 특징도 곁들였다.
원형 좌석은 북미에서 느낄 수 있는 사교성을 상징하고, 스테인리스스틸 바와 스툴은 칵테일은 물론 버거와 밀크셰이크를 연상시킨다.
간접적이긴 하지만, 아돌프 로스(Adolf Loos)가 약 100년 전에 비엔나의 같은 지역에 만든 아메리칸 바에서 사용한 것들을 암시하는 듯, 빛을 내는 테이블을 마련했다.
또한, 우주 개발 경쟁 시절에서 착안한 표현 방식은 50년대와 60년대에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 사치를 피한다.
아톰펑크(Atompunk)와 구기(Googie) 미학의 상상력은 통찰력의 편의, 과학의 위험에 대한 충분한 지식, 파스텔색,
그리고 과거 시절의 현대적인 디자인과 결합해 보다 부드러워졌다.
내화(耐火) 음향 패널의 감청색은 계단 난간 벽의 흰색과 만나 지중해에서 볼 수 있는 대비를 연상시킨다.
붙박이 좌석의 하얀 대리석과 갈고리 모양의 황동 벽걸이는 미래에 대한 불안을 진정시키는, 시대를 초월한 그 이상의 솜씨다.
In 1957, the first man-made satellite Sputnik launched to the sky.
This unassuming four-legged sphere circled our planet, the Earth, for three months before disintegrating in the atmosphere,
and occasioned the awkward period we know as the Space Race, during which the Soviet Union and the USA competed for astronautic supremacy.
Sputnik Bar in Vienna’s fancy first district, Austria is a replica of Sputnik, the protagonist of the wavelength.
There are many elements of spacecraft in the space, such as bolstered curved leather seats,
a stainless steel bar fitted with oversize bolts, stainless steel stools topped with leather, luminous tables,
bright yellow toilets, wall lamps that resemble rotating sirens, and LED lights hidden in window frames that make frosted glass glow with a fade.
The design team didn’t duplicate the spacecraft made by the Soviet in the past.
They also added the characteristics of an American restaurant, not the Soviet Union,
to the elements of the spacecraft. Sputnik’s circular seating suggests a sociability that feels North American,
and the stainless steel bar and stools evoke burgers and milkshakes as much as they evoke cocktails.
America is also referenced, albeit indirectly, in the glow tables,
as they allude to the ones Adolf Loos employed in his American Bar more than a hundred years ago in the same area of Vienna.
